Ways to Travel

Getting Around Sri Lanka

Although Sri Lanka is small in size travelling around the island can be frustrating and time consuming. The country’s narrow roads, congested with pedestrians, cyclists and trishaws make travelling difficult. However, once you leave the hustle and bustle of Colombo, you can enjoy many scenic drives around the coastal line or in the hill country. Sri Lanka is beautiful and even though small in size offers visitors many travel options. Now it's possible to do a city tour of Colombo as well.

Air

Charter flights can be arranged to any destination in Sri Lanka through Deccan Aviation Lanka ( www.simplifly.com).Deccan Aviation Lanka is a six year old helicopter and charter aircraft operator based in Sri Lanka. The company is authorized to operate both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft in the country.Today Deccan is the airline of choice for business or leisure travellers who place a premium on service, comfort and safety. The company comply with health and safety standards of major global tour operators and NGOs such as TUI, Kuoni, UN WFP, ICRC, etc

Rail

Trains connect Colombo with all tourist towns, but first-class carriages, air conditioning and dining cars are available on only a few. New fast services operate on the principal routes, including an intercity express service between Colombo and Kandy, otherwise journeys are fairly leisurely.
The Viceroy Express is the only passenger steam train still in operation in Sri Lanka. Every journey is hauled by a vintage, British locomotive, at least 50 years old.

Road

Traffic drives on the left. Flashing lights mean that the driver is asserting right of way.

Bus

An extensive network of services to most parts of the Island is afforded with reasonable quality by the Sri Lanka Central Transport Board website: www.transport.gov.lk. Private bus drivers are paid according to the number of passengers and can often drive rather dangerously.

Long distance services are operated from Colombo at the Pettah Central Bus Depot. There are two services, one operated by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and the other operated by private bus companies. The private bus station is located close to the Central Depot. Most of the buses have air-conditioning. Buses to the coastal towns depart every ½ an hour while Kandy is every 15 minutes.

Taxi

These have yellow tops and red and white plates. In Colombo, taxis are metered but it is advisable to agree a rate before setting off. Drivers expect a 10% tip.

Trishaws (Tuktuks)

Ideal for short journeys within towns and cities, and for short excursions, the country’s many trishaws would be happy to offer you a ride. The vehicles are mainly Indian-made Bajaj rickshaws. Most trishaws are not metered. Always agree on a fare beforehand. Most drivers offer a decent fare, charging approximately Rs. 50 per kilometre.

Car hires

This is available from several international agencies. Air-conditioned minibuses are also available. Motorised rickshaws are also readily available for hire in towns and villages. Chauffeur-driven cars are less expensive and recommended.

Currency In Sri Lanka

Currency In Sri Lanka known as "Sri Lankan Rupee"

Currency in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR or Rs) is a floating currency, which means the exchange rate is determined by market forces. However, the Sri Lankan authorities sometimes intervene in order to keep the exchange rate from fluctuating too much.

One Rupee (Rs1) is made up of 100 cents. There are a total of six coins and eight banknotes currently in circulation. The coins are: 25 cents, 50 cents, Rs1, Rs2, Rs5 and Rs10. The notes are: Rs10, Rs20, Rs50, Rs100, Rs500, Rs1000, Rs2000 and Rs5000.

Outside of hotels and big shops, change can be hard to come by in Sri Lanka. Make sure you have enough notes in lower denominations (Rs20 to Rs500), especially if you plan to shop at markets or in rural areas.

Exchanging currency in Sri Lanka

Airport currency exchange kiosks and many hotels offer currency exchange services. However, the rates on offer are usually unfavourable, and you may also be charged high fees. You’re better off using a currency exchange service or making an ATM withdrawal.

Using travellers’ cheques in Sri Lanka

Travellers’ cheques rarely have attractive rates, and cashing them in Sri Lanka can be a challenge. Many banks have rather short opening hours - usually Mondays to Fridays from 9:00am to 1:00pm - and most don’t accept them.

For these reasons, travellers’ cheques are best avoided. You’re often much better off exchanging cash or using an ATM.

Using credit and debit cards in Sri Lanka

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Sri Lanka, even in smaller towns. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted cards. AmEx is also accepted, but to a lesser extent. That said, it’s still a good idea to carry some cash with you just in case.

Some businesses may try to apply a surcharge if you pay by card. This is illegal.

You may also come across establishments that display their prices in US Dollars, especially in more touristy areas. While this is convenient, you should always make sure the transaction is performed in the local currency.

In Sri Lanka, it’s illegal to perform a card transaction in a foreign currency. In addition, if you choose to be charged in your home currency, the exchange rate will be determined using Dynamic Currency Conversion, not the mid-market rate. This almost always results in an unfavourable exchange rate.

Remember to let your bank know the dates when you’ll be abroad. If you don’t, it might think your Sri Lankan transactions are fraudulent, which may result in your card being frozen for security reasons.

Buying SIM Card at the Airport

If — like most visitors — you arrive into the country at Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo, buying a SIM card will be extremely simple. As you exit the baggage reclaim area, you’ll encounter a row of money changers followed by a row of cell company vendors, as well as several ATMs that will take international cards.

If you’ve got a few minutes, ask around at each vendor and see which one has the best rates at the time. Bear in mind that you’ll probably pay a little more at these stalls – they only offer ‘tourist packages,’ which are more expensive than standard plans.

The tourist packages ran around 1200 LKR (~$10) for the SIM card with 2GB of data and more local and international calls and SMS .

Here are the links to main service providers which will make you easy.
